BREAKING NEWS : What Sheffield Wednesday’s academy manager, Steve Haslam, said about the Owls new signing

Sheffield Wednesday delighted to tie down ‘highly regarded’ youth international

Sheffield Wednesday’s academy manager, Steve Haslam, says Pierce Charles’ commitment to the club is ‘wonderful news’.
It was reported on Friday afternoon that the 18-year-old had signed a new contract with the Owls as he approached the end of his previous contract, and the news has been welcomed with applause from the Wednesday faithful as the club secures an intriguing young talent.

Charles has been in and around the first team setup for some time, with Darren Moore bringing him through at Hillsborough, but it was Danny Röhl who gave him his professional debut against Coventry City earlier this year.

Haslam, who has watched the Northern Ireland youth international evolve since his arrival from Manchester City in 2021, believes he is prepared to face the challenges ahead. “It’s fantastic news that Pierce has extended his contract with the club,” he said on Wednesday’s official website. “He is well respected on both the domestic and international levels. Pierce has been working with the first team on a daily basis for around 18 months, and the professionals that work with him day in and day out have been quite impressed with his improvement.

“There are further challenges to come but Pierce is very level-headed and has the potential to successfully negotiate the next steps ahead.”

Charles is now the sole player with first-team experience who will be on the club’s roster as of July 1st, with James Beadle’s loan expiring and Cameron Dawson’s contract ending.
