Edward Rabjohn, 21, from Sheffield, made a racial gesture toward Coventry’s Kasey Palmer during the second half of Sheffield Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship match against the Sky Blues at Hillsborough on January 20. A spectator who made a racist gesture towards Coventry City’s Kasey Palmer has received a five-year football ban.

Edward Rabjohn, 21, of Sheffield, made the gesture towards Palmer during the second half of Sheffield Wednesday’s Sky Bet Championship match against the Sky Blues at Hillsborough on January 20.

Rabjohn was seen on camera making the gesture, and in a police interview, he admitted to the act and thereafter fled the stadium.

Palmer reported the gesture to match referee Anthony Backhouse, who in turn informed Coventry manager Mark Robins.

Rabjohn pleaded guilty to racially insulting Palmer at Sheffield Magistrates Court on Monday.

In addition to the ban, he was sentenced to a two-year community order and 200 hours of unpaid service. The sentence was increased due to the racially aggravated character of the crime.

“Mr Palmer immediately disclosed his abuse, which was then escalated and referred to the police for inquiry. I would encourage everyone who encounters this type of inappropriate activity to report it right away in order to help eradicate it from the game.”
