Rotherham United has made their second signing of the transfer window, with manager Steve Evans seeking to add a third inside the next 24 hours.
Defender Joe Rafferty will offer his experience winning promotion from League One with Portsmouth.
The 30-year-old right-back made 39 games in Pompey’s title-winning season, 36 of which came from the start. Rafferty was also regarded as one of the dressing room leaders.
However, his contract at Fratton Park expires next month, and Evans has jumped at the opportunity. The Liverpool player will sign a two-year contract as soon as he becomes a free agency.
He follows the signing of Jonson Clarke-Harris, who will join on a free transfer from Peterborough United this summer.
Rotherham has also sold goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, after Stoke City triggered his release.
Rotherham were comfortably bottom of the Championship last season, and former boss Evans has been tasked with getting the Millers back there at the first attempt.
Evans has reclaimed control of transfers from Rob Scott, who was promoted to director of football with the December appointment of Leam Richardson.
Rafferty, who can also play wing-back or midfield, began his career with Rochdale, where he achieved promotion to League One after six and a half years. He spent three and a half seasons at Preston North End in the Championship before joining Portsmouth in 2022.
