LATEST UPDATE : Sheffield Wednesday gem earns international call-up after contract announcement

Sheffield Wednesday could soon have seven players who have earned senior international caps.

Sheffield Wednesday had a successful end to the 2023/24 season, and some of their players had plenty to celebrate on the international scene. Di’Shon Bernard made his debut for Jamaica a month before joining the Owls and has since earned 13 caps.

He made three starts in the CONCACAF Nations League finals, helping his team qualify for this year’s Copa America.

Meanwhile, Joey Phuthi made his debut for Zimbabwe in March, despite just appearing once on Wednesday.

The two are the only Owls currently playing for their international squad, while Barry Bannan, Will Vaulks, Callum Paterson, and Liam Palmer have all previously represented their countries.

Phuthi and Bernard could now be joined by Pierce Charles, who has been included to Northern Ireland’s most recent squad for upcoming friendlies.
Michael O’Neill’s side will face Spain and Andorra next month, with the 18-year-old seeking to earn his first cap.

Charles joins former Owls loanee Bailey Peacock-Farrell and Plymouth’s Conor Hazard on the squad.

Charles has had an excellent few days, having extended his contract at Hillsborough over the weekend.

Danny Rohl earlier stated that he was desperate for the club to keep the teenager, and he got his wish.

What is happening to Pierce Charles now?
With James Beadle returning to Brighton, his dedication to Wednesday means he may be handed a larger role in the senior squad.
Charles just has two senior outings to his name, so it appears unlikely that he will be ready to take any significant leaps yet, but he will be looking to earn a spot on the bench next season.

Cameron Dawson, on the other hand, was offered a new contract by Wednesday, which is unexpected given how far down the pecking order he had fallen.

This could just be due to the club’s shortage of goalkeepers, but with the Yorkshire club anxious to re-sign Beadle and Charles extending his stay, it would be unusual if he agreed to continue as a backup.

If Dawson takes his spot on the bench or perhaps between the sticks, Charles may be loaned out instead.

The teenager is yet to play senior football and could benefit from more experience if he is to live up to expectations in the future.
