LATET UPDATE : Sheffield Wednesday are now close to confirm the signing of Birmingham City key player

A former Sheffield Wednesday target has been released from his present club.

Sheffield Wednesday spent the January transfer window looking for a new forward to improve their prospects of staying up. The Owls concluded the season with the second fewest goals in the division, but Ike Ugbo’s loan arrival was enough to keep them from relegation.

Danny Rohl’s side were extensively associated with Duncan McGuire at the conclusion of the transfer window, and it was believed that they would pursue him again this summer, but there has been little discussion of the Yorkshire club’s interest.

Another striker they were linked with briefly in January was Scott Hogan, who has struggled for game time with Birmingham City this season.

The ‘excellent’ 32-year-old scored 34 goals in his first four seasons at St Andrews, but has only one goal and eleven starts this season.

Despite his diminishing condition, Wednesday were rumored to be interested in Hogan, but a deal never materialized.

Birmingham have confirmed that the attacker will leave the club on a free transfer this summer, which gives the Owls a boost if they are still interested in him.

Hogan will very likely be in high demand in the EFL, but his £11,500 weekly salary may make finding a new team more difficult.

Scott Hogan offered hope at Birmingham City

Wednesday will undoubtedly be looking for a new number 9, especially if they can’t entice Ugbo back to Hillsborough.

The 32-year-old isn’t fit for a new era at Hillsborough.

It would be extremely unusual if they were willing to satisfy his compensation demands, especially given that he has recently turned 32.

He is also not the goal striker they require, and the club may well keep Lee Gregory and Michael Smith if they sign Hogan.

Wednesday should start searching for younger players to build their squad around, with loan signings Ugbo, James Beadle, and Ian Poveda having a significant impact in the second part of the season.

Rohl’s arrival appears to have put an end to Wednesday’s disastrous transfer business, and if they can emulate January’s success, fans may be filled with optimism on deadline day.
