Two Sheffield Wednesday legends have reacted to George Byers’ goodbye on social media.
George Byers joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2021 and played a key role in their stunning promotion to the Championship, scoring nine goals in 24 games.
The midfielder had been a regular in the first part of the season, so his loan move to Blackpool in January came as a surprise.
Byers’ contract will expire this summer, and he was one of six players dismissed when the club’s retained list was confirmed last week.
After three years at Hillsborough, the 27-year-old used social media to say his goodbyes.
George Byers offers a ’emotional goodbye’
He wrote, “When I first signed with Wednesday, I never imagined I’d fall in love with the club as much as I have.
“I’ve enjoyed the best three years of my career with this fantastic club, with many good moments to look back on with great pleasure.
“I’d like to thank all of the players and staff who have been with me on this trip; I’ve had the opportunity to share a dressing room with some of the best individuals and characters in football.
“Being a key member of a promotion-winning team and contributing to the club’s return to its former glory was an incredible experience and achievement.
“To all you fans, gosh, where do I begin? Your support has been genuinely overwhelming. I hope you witnessed a player who understood what it meant to put on the blue and white shirt and represent your football team. I now consider myself to be one of you, and I will continue to support the team for the rest of my life.
“I’m sad that it’s over, but not all fairytales are everlasting. I hope to return someday, but for now, this is an emotional goodbye!
“I wish everyone involved in Sheffield
Wednesday, best wishes for the future.”
The midfielder received sorrowful responses.
Byers’ social media message soon demonstrated the closeness he had with his former teammates, with several Owls players responding to his post.
Liam Palmer responded to Byers’ goodbye with a sad three-word remark, “Who’s cutting onions 😢.”
Barry Bannan responded, “My mukka, you will be missed mate.”
Josh Windass also responded: “It’s a pleasure to play with you, George x.”
Dominic Iorfa commented: “What a guy.”
Aden Flint, former Sheffield Wednesday defender, wrote, “Was a pleasure hound.” George Byers was a prominent player under Danny Rohl, therefore his departure to League One came as a surprise.
The Owls’ survival, however, marks the beginning of a new era under Rohl, so it makes sense to release the midfielder.
The German coach is ready to rebuild his roster and hopes to bring in a number of his own players, while he expects Dejphon Chansiri to open his pocketbook so he can build a much improved squad. Byers was a fan favorite at Hillsborough, but he may not be at the level that Rohl expects of his club next season.
