BREAKING NEWS : Barnsley agree compensation fee for League One manager, talks ongoing

Barnsley are in negotiations with Darrell Clarke after agreeing on a compensation sum with Cheltenham Town, according to writer John Percy.
Barnsley are searching for a new manager after parting ways with Neill Collins one game before the end of the 2023/24 season.
Due to the unexpected timing of the decision and the lack to name a replacement, Martin Devaney guided the Tykes to the play-offs. There, they were defeated by Bolton Wanderers, but Oxford United eventually won and joined Portsmouth and Derby County in the Championship.

The South Yorkshire club is still looking for a new manager, and it appears that they are getting closer to making an important hire.

According to X reporter John Percy, talks between Barnsley and Cheltenham Town manager Darrell Clarke are still underway after the Tykes and Robins agreed on a compensation settlement.

It comes amid allegations on Thursday morning that Clarke is set to depart Cheltenham Town, which he took to the verge of survival before being relegated to League Two.

A deserved move.
Barnsley fans may be skeptical at first, given Clarke’s relegation from Cheltenham Town.

Despite the fact that the odds were stacked against him, he took over a team in desperate need and guided them to the verge of survival. His work with the Robins has been fantastic, so it’s no surprise to see him connected with a high-profile position at Oakwell.
Clarke was Bristol Rovers’ manager from 2014 to 2018, and he has previously guided Walsall and Port Vale, the latter of which was promoted from League Two.

The outcome of the talks with Barnsley remains to be seen, but with a compensation agreement in place, it appears like this appointment might be a success for the Tykes.

Another Robin raid?

Barnsley has swooped in for another popular Cheltenham boss, leaving fans of the latter with a sense of déjà vu. Of course, Michael Duff had a successful spell in charge of the Gloucestershire team before moving to Oakwell. Clarke could be the latest to go that road.

It’s a much-needed appointment for the Tykes following a difficult search for their next boss. There have been numerous names linked and people removed from the list, but with Clarke’s pay agreed upon, they will be trying to move this one forward.
