DerbyshireLive gives you the latest Derby County news, including what Carlton Palmer has said regarding the Rams’ interest in Josh Murphy. Carlton Palmer believes Derby County and head coach Paul Warne are the ideal fit for Josh Murphy, as the competition to sign the winger heats up.
The Rams are one of several clubs interested in the Oxford winger, who is in high demand after leaving Cardiff for a free move worth £11 million. QPR, Portsmouth, and West Brom are all reportedly interested in the 29-year-old, who has plenty of suitors after leading Oxford to the Championship this season.
Murphy will have plenty of clubs to pick from and Oxford have not given up hope of keeping him at the Us, but with Derby looking to add to their attack this summer, former England international Palmer says the Rams would be ideal. “Derby, Portsmouth, QPR and West Brom have all joined the race to sign Josh Murphy,” Palmer told FLW. “He’s had an outstanding season for Oxford United, culminating in them being promoted to the Championship, and Josh duly obliged in the play-off final, scoring the two goals to get Oxford promoted.
“He’s out of contract, he’s 29 years old, he’s very experienced, and he’s available on a free. This puts him in a very, very good position in terms of getting the best contract he can, but also from Josh’s point of view, he’s got to look at where he’s going to get plenty of game time.
“He’s recovered his form at Oxford, and he’s done exceptionally well under Des Buckingham. Obviously, at 29, he wants the greatest deal possible; this is a very important contract for him; nevertheless, he must also consider where he is liked and where he can play his best football, and he has been outstanding at Oxford.
“Sometimes it’s better to know the devil than not know the devil, but it’s a brief career, and we all know that when you’re 38 or 39 years old, you can’t just live off nostalgia, so he needs to find the best deal for himself. For me, Oxford has come up, but when you look at the sides that are interested in Derby, Portsmouth, QPR, and West Brom, they’re
Everyone will have money to be at the top of the table.Oxford is just promoted, and they will face difficulties next season. Would he be guaranteed game time at West Brom and QPR every week? I doubt it.\
“I believe he would have the opportunity to play week in and week out at Derby and Portsmouth.” So it depends, but I believe Derby, if he does not opt to continue at Oxford, would be the ideal fit for him under Paul Warne. But I’m confident Oxford will do all possible to keep him at the football club.”
