DONE DEAL : Barnsley has announced 46 years old as their new head coach

Derbyshire Live brings you the latest Derby County news, including what is going on at Barnsley after they missed out on promotion. Barnsley have named Darrell Clarke as their new manager, as the Tykes prepare for another season in League One after their play-off defeat.

The Tykes have paid Cheltenham compensation for the former Hartlepool and Mansfield midfielder, who performed admirably for the Robins despite being relegated last season. Clarke has signed a two-year contract with the option for a third and succeeds Neill Collins, who was fired at the end of the season.

Barnsley will be hopeful he can promote them to the Championship after they lost out on a return to the second division this season with their defeat to Bolton.

In the playoffs, the Rams finished second in the standings. Clarke stated, “I’m incredibly happy and can’t wait to get started. I’m happy to be leading this football team, and I’m looking forward to it.

“I didn’t need to be sold on the club, it’s got huge potential and I’m excited to get myself going and get the squad rebuilt and try to push on for a promotion challenge.”

Clarke will be accompanied by Martin Devaney, who will be the assistant head coach, and it is unclear whether Conor Hourihane will join them at Oakwell.

The former Derby captain, who was released at the end of the season, was expected to join the coaching staff at the club he led. Barnsley fans on social media are hopeful he’ll arrive soon.

One fan said, “Welcome to town.” Please declare Hourihane as a player/coach. “His experience would be invaluable.”
