ROANOKE, Virginia (WDBJ) Early Wednesday morning, a William Byrd athlete committed to continuing his sports career at a school he has always wanted to attend.
Terrier quarterback Israel Hairston signed a letter of intent as a preferred walk-on to play football at Virginia Tech.
The four-sport high school athlete has a GPA of more than 4.0 and was named Class 3 VHSL Scholar Athlete of the Year.
After signing, he expressed how great it is to have a school like Virginia Tech show interest in his athletic and academic ability.
“It was great,” he said. “It has always been a childhood fantasy of mine, as it is for many other children in Virginia. Having that option was fantastic for me. For my recruiting process, I was very interested in finding an engineering school. That is exactly what I want to do with my life. That is what my brother and father do, and it is where I wanted to take that step. Virginia Tech seemed like a home to me.”
