Giannis Antetokounmpo has worn a variety of hats during his tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks, including MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and champion. Could he include owner on the list?
Not an owner of the Bucks, though one should never say never, but rather an international team. Giannis recently saw Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens’ qualifying to the EuroLeague final game and spoke with reporters, which led to a discussion about his potential future journey into ownership and which teams he is currently interested in.
He specifically declared a desire to buy Panathinaikos or Olympiacos if their owners were willing to sell. Interestingly, Antetokounmpo stated that he would most likely not play for either of those teams because they did not want him when he was on the rise as a player, but he did not mince words when the possibility of ownership was mentioned. Antetokounmpo turned to his agent, George Panou, who was standing next to him, and suggested he acquire a Greek franchise.
“If they’re selling it to us,” he explained.
“If Mr. Giannakopoulos sells it to us, which I don’t see happening, or Mr. Angelopoulos, I will buy a team,” he said.
Could Giannis Antetokounmpo own a team? He certainly wants to.
Antetokounmpo stated that it is unlikely that the owners will sell to him at this time, but he does express a desire to achieve that title at some point. Depending on how things go for the rest of his career, it wouldn’t be unexpected if the Greek Freak wanted to have his name connected with the Bucks ownership group, but it’s too early to think about that yet.
The Greek Freak is currently focused on the Milwaukee Bucks. The soon-to-be 30-year-old must have a chip on his shoulder after missing significant time in the playoffs over the last two seasons, which was a huge role in Milwaukee’s struggles. Antetokounmpo is definitely determined, as he promises Bucks supporters that they will return to the NBA’s peak someday.
Ownership talks will have to wait because Giannis is currently focused on winning as many championships as possible with the Bucks. Let’s hope the calf injury that restricted him in the final part of the NBA season is recovering well.
Stay tuned for additional Milwaukee Bucks insight.
