LATEST UPDATE : Barnsley still pushing for deal to sign former Derby County captain

DerbyshireLive gives you the latest Derby County news, including Conor Hourihane’s move to Oakwell. Conor Hourihane’s move to Barnsley is reportedly “moving closer” as the Tykes seek an emotional return for the former Derby County captain.

The Tykes have signed Darrell Clarke as manager following his departure from Cheltenham last week, as they prepare for another season in League One after losing in the play-offs to Bolton. According to the Barnsley Chronicle, discussions with Hourihane are ongoing as they try to finalize a deal for the ex-Derby captain, who was one of six players released after the club gained promotion.

Hourihane is anxious to take the next step into coaching, having studied for his badges while at Derby and also working with Aston Villa’s under-16s.

A player/coach role at Barnsley has been proposed, and a deal for Hourihane is expected to be completed this week. That would mark a triumphant return to the club when he won the EFL Trophy and promoted to the Championship before joining Villa in 2017. After his departure from Derby was announced, Hourihane stated: “Two fantastic years with the Rams has come to an end. From the opening goal against Oxford to League One promotion.

“Captaining the club to the championship was a great honour for me. Getting promoted was my goal when I signed, and finishing on that note seems appropriate. I wish the team all the best for the upcoming season and hope that it can continue to move forward in the right path. “Thank you, Rams.”

Hourihane contributed significantly to Derby’s promotion success last season, scoring a critical winner in a 3-2 victory over Burton Albion at Pride Park. He made 47 appearances last season and scored six goals.
