The real reason why Nottingham Forest signed Giovani Reyna with Nuno ‘terrified’

A respected journalist has now declared exactly why Nottingham Forest chose to buy Giovanni Reyna during the January transfer window.

Signing wonderkids isn’t a daily thing at the City Ground. However, when Forest signed Reyna on loan from Dortmund for the second half of 2023/24, it was a signing that attracted the eye.

Forest had Andrey Santos on loan from Chelsea for the first half of the season but he only managed seven minutes of game time in the Premier League.

That didn’t work out and Forest sent him back and pinched Reyna instead — a move which again had very limited success.

Now, it has been revealed why the Reds chose to take a chance on the American superstar.

The actual reason Nottingham Forest signed Giovanni Reyna.
The 21-year-old seemed to have been destined to play as a backup at City Ground.

Daniel Taylor is an award-winning journalist who supports Forest and knows what’s going on there. He answered questions on The Athletic’s website yesterday, and he explained why Forest decided to sign Reyna.

Taylor stated: “Reyna was signed because Nuno was terrified, put bluntly, of MGW getting injured – and he was another wide option.”

Reyna started only two games for the club, making nine appearances in total and scoring no goals.

Reyna was the correct player at the wrong time.
Nuno Espirito Santo was understandably concerned about losing Gibbs-White to injury.

Still, it’s unfortunate for Reyna that he arrived to Forest with high expectations only to be denied a regular role in the club.

Reyna was perhaps the right player at the wrong time.

He appears to have little future at Dortmund, and in an ideal world, Forest would have signed him, given him a chance, and then attempted to sign him permanently.

Finally, he’s played so little football for Forest that it’s impossible to say what he’s capable of in the Premier League.
