Gary O’Neil might reprise one of his masterclasses from 2023/24 at Wolves with a player who the Old Gold are said to admire.
Wolves finished 14th in the Premier League, as Gary O’Neil concluded his debut season at Molineux.
The Englishman shown that he is the ideal match for the club by wanting to improve with his group, despite their lack of depth during the season.
One factor that helped the manager prosper in his rookie season was his attention to detail when it came to getting the most out of his players, as several of them improved their form from the previous season.
Matheus Cunha was one of those who benefited from O’Neil’s arrival, and the manager may now adopt a similar technique to improve another youngster connected with a move to the club.
Wolves are interested in Arsenal’s striker Eddie Nketiah.
This week, GIVEMESPORT reported on Wolves’ long-standing interest in Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah, who is also coveted by Crystal Palace and Fulham.
According to transfer expert Dean Jones, the Old Gold are ‘on the search’ for a new striker, but will face competition from two Premier League clubs.
A separate 90min report indicated that the Gunners could seek a fee of around £35 million for the out-of-favour forward, who could go from Arsenal’s trash to Wolves’ gold.
Eddie Nketiah may follow in Matheus Cunha’s footsteps at Wolves.
As previously stated, O’Neil has transformed Cunha’s fate at Wolves, which he can recreate in Nketiah, who, with the correct coaching, has the potential to follow in the Brazilian’s footsteps.
At Arsenal, the 25-year-old has showed glimpses of his potential in front of goal, with the fundamentals in place to suggest a clinical forward may emerge.
Unfortunately, due to competition at the Emirates, the striker has been unable to consistently secure game time, resulting in his development being stalled.
Cunha had a similar story at Atletico Madrid before joining Wolves, as the forward only started two of 11 La Liga games in the first half of the 2022/23 season and did not score.
Unfortunately, things did not improve for the 25-year-old when he moved to Molineux under Julen Lopetegui, where he scored twice in 17 Premier League games.
Since O’Neil’s appointment, there has been a lot of focus on getting the most out of Cunha, with the manager understanding exactly what makes the Brazilian tick and making tiny changes to help the £44 million signing prosper.
Under O’Neil’s leadership, Wolves’ number 12 finished the season with 12 goals and seven assists, demonstrating the manager’s ability to bring out the best in players in need.
That’s where Nketiah comes in; when you look at some of the Arsenal outsiders’ performances in the 2023/24 season, it’s easy to see how much potential there is to be awakened, which the Wolves manager could do.
Mikel Arteta described Nketiah’s effect with the Gunners last season as ‘amazing’, and a move away from the constraints of North London might be the right transition for both Nketiah and Wolves, who could develop together in the same way that Cunha and O’Neil have.
