Colchester United have revealed that they have signed the former Pompey goalkeeper.
Matt Macey has joined Colchester United, where he will work alongside a former Pompey manager.
The 29-year-old was released by the Blues earlier this month and has joined the League Two team. He becomes Colchester’s first acquisition of the summer and is the first player U’s manager Danny Cowley has pulled away from his former employers – albeit Macey only arrived at Fratton Park in the aftermath of the former Fratton Park boss’s dismissal in January 2023. Macey joined Pompey on loan from Luton Town on the same day that John Mousinho was named head coach. During the second part of the 2022-23 season, the 6″7″ goalie appeared in 21 games and preserved 15 clean sheets. He returned to the Blues in January 2024 to cover for Will Norris, replacing Ryan Schofield as back-up goalkeeper after being released by Luton in September. However, Macey did not play when Pompey won League One last month, instead sitting on the bench behind Will Norris for the 20 games he was available for.
“I would have loved to have played, but, as everyone knows, Will’s form has been unbelievable, and that’s the way football goes sometimes,” Macey remarked earlier this month, reflecting on his second term at Fratton Park.
‘The most important thing is that the club was promoted, which everyone completely deserves.’ Prior to rejoining Pompey, Macey played 14 games for Luton Town. The goalkeeper has also played for Hibs, Plymouth Argyle, and Accrington. The Bath-born shot-stopper also represented Arsenal in the Europa League. Macey is Pompey’s third released player to find a club this summer, following Joe Rafferty and Sean Raggett to League One outfit Rotherham United. Lee Evans, Josh Martin, Ryan Schofield, Haji Mnoga, Harry Jewitt-White, Liam Vincent, and Josh Dockerill also left but are still without a club.
