Gary O’Neil could now sign ‘incredible’ Wolves striker target for free amid contract dispute

A former Wolves target could become available for free this summer due to a contract disagreement with his current club.

Gary O’Neil will be eager to address Wolves’ lack of depth this summer, as the Old Gold anticipates a busy transfer season.

After leading the Midlands club to a 14th-place finish, the manager will rely on Jeff Shi to fulfill his transfer wish and provide the squad with a new number 9.

Some names have previously been suggested as forwards that Wolves could pursue, and one former target’s current circumstance presents an intriguing scenario for O’Neil.

Former Wolves target Boulaye Dia might be available for free this summer.
On deadline day last summer, Wolves attempted to sign Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia, but the Italian club rejected the offer.

A lot has changed since then, with the 27-year-old effectively exiled from his club after refusing to come on as a substitute in March, causing Salernitana to drop him from the team.
With Dia set to leave this summer, a report from Salernitana News details an intriguing prospect for Wolves, with the player now making his intentions known.

Despite getting an offer from Lazio, it is understood that the Senegal international wants to move to the Premier League and wishes to have his contract terminated.

As a result, Wolves may receive the Serie A talisman for free, with the Old Gold cited in the report as Salernitana’s ‘original sin’ to Dia for not accepting Wolves’ bid in 2023.

Wolves must monitor Dia’s status this summer.
Journalist Josh Bunting praised Dia as ‘amazing’ for his form with Salernitana during the 2022/23 season, which was justified given his strong goal-scoring form.

That season, the former Wolves target had a role in 22 Serie A goals, scoring 16 and assisting six, according to Transfermarkt, which saw him grab the eye of O’Neil.

He made his Premier League debut shortly after arriving at Molineux. Given that the Wolves manager has stated that he wants a striker this summer, the Old Gold should aim to recruit Dia if his status remains unchanged.

After playing in Ligue 1, La Liga, and Serie A, it will be interesting to see how the Senegalese star performs in the Premier League, especially at a team desperate for a number nine.

The potential of a free transfer for the player should pique O’Neil’s interest, as he might land a seasoned goalscorer for free while Wolves rebuild their squad for 2024/25.
