Swindon Town have approached Jack Payne about a potential reunion, according to The Deck.
Swindon Town are looking to re-sign their former attacking midfielder, who was released from Charlton Athletic in League One. Last season, Payne, 29, was on loan at MK Dons in League Two. He made 48 appearances across all competitions last season, scoring seven and assisting six in 2023/24. He was a regular with the Addicks the previous season in League One, and he scored eight goals in 39 appearances for Charlton Athletic.
Payne moved to the Valley in 2022 after making 88 appearances and contributing 31 goals for Swindon Town between 2020 and 2022. Now, his former club has inquired about re-signing him this summer. However, The Deck claims he has various options, and while he has yet to reject down his previous club, he is still deciding which move is best for him. Positive signs
Swindon Town missed out on Dan Kemp earlier today, as the midfielder chose to join Stevenage in League One instead.
However, it appears that the League Two team has reacted positively, and Payne would be a valuable addition to their squad if they can pull this done this summer.
The offensive midfielder would add experience and goals to Swindon Town’s team, which, after a dismal performance last season, might help them climb the fourth division.
A difficult contract to complete.
The 29-year-old is still capable of excelling in League One, and if he has options in the third division, this could be difficult for Swindon Town to pull off.
The club’s poor performance last season also shows that they are a long way from fighting for the top half of the fourth tier, so the lure of promotion isn’t really there if he returns to his old side.
However, it is not impossible, and fans will be keeping a watch on this one in the coming weeks, hoping that Payne would join Swindon Town for the second time in his career.
