BREAKING : Charlton Athletic is closing in on a permanent deal for 22-year-old centre-back

Charlton Athletic is closing in on a permanent deal for Millwall centre-back Alex Mitchell.

The 22-year-old defender has impressed at all of his loan clubs and was a key member of Lincoln City’s League One play-off squad last season.

Nathan Jones, the Addicks manager, wants to add another centre-back to his squad after releasing Michael Hector and Terell Thomas to compete for a starting berth with Macaulay Gillesphey, Rarmani Edmonds-Green, and Lloyd Jones.

The strong Mitchell appeared 41 times in all competitions for the Imps.

He also performed well at Leyton Orient the previous season, making 30 games.

Mitchell has also had first-team experience with St Johnstone and Bromley.

He has another 12 months left on his Den contract.

Mitchell informed our paper in March that he intended to continue playing senior football. “I’ve played 104 games now, and I’ve kind of made a career for myself outside of Millwall.

“I am aware that I am on Millwall’s books; if it works out, it does, and if it doesn’t, it does not.

“I’m not too concerned about that. Millwall has given me the opportunity to do what I’ve done thus far.

“For some reason, coming here has reminded me of that. I appreciate going to training and being around Lincoln; it is a true privilege to perform what I do. Millwall already has a number of defensive options, and they hope to sign Japhet Tanganga, who was released by Tottenham.
