Swansea City is reportedly interested in Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff. Swansea City are looking to recruit Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff this summer, according to Wales Online.
Adding a new striker is said to be the Swans’ top priority this summer, and Langstaff is “a name very much on the radar”.
Swansea manager Luke Williams signed Langstaff from Gateshead in the summer of 2022 while he was in charge of Notts County, and he scored 41 goals in 47 games in all competitions to help the Magpies win promotion from the National League in his first year at the club.
There were some doubts about whether Langstaff would be able to make the step up to League Two, but his exceptional form persisted.
This season, he finished as the top scorer in the EFL, placing him in the fourth tier. Langstaff scored 28 league goals and one FA Cup goal, but despite his prolific scoring, Notts finished 14th in the standings after a terrible second half of the season following Williams’ departure in January.
Swansea have yet to complete a signing this summer, but Williams stated this week that he has “sat with players in person” and “had several meetings with players on the laptop”, adding that the club is attempting to take a “front foot” and “aggressive” approach in the transfer market.
Latest on Macaulay Langstaff’s Notts County future
Langstaff was supposedly linked with Birmingham City, Sunderland, Peterborough United, Derby County, Wrexham, Hearts, and Coventry City in January, but he stayed at Meadow Lane.
Notts could lose Langstaff this summer after missing out on promotion, but in an apparent attempt to keep him, head coach Stuart Maynard named the 27-year-old as the club’s new captain this week.
“First and foremost, on behalf of the entire club, I’d want to thank Kyle Cameron for his service as captain over the last three years. “He led the team back into the EFL, and his contributions during his tenure are well known,” Maynard told the club’s official website.
“However, we believe that this summer provides an opportunity to make positive changes to the squad’s leadership structure as we prepare for another highly competitive League Two promotion challenge.
“Macaulay has everything we look for in a club captain of this size. He has earned the respect of everyone – players, staff, and supporters – by his tremendous, consistent performances and the way he conducts himself on a daily basis.
“His work ethic is infectious and, as captain, he will play a huge role in creating the working environment we need if we’re to be successful this season.”
Langstaff is under contract with Notts until the summer of 2027, and appointing him captain could imply that the Magpies are confident in retaining him, but Wales Online claims there is “every chance Swansea may look to test their resolve before the close of the window”.
Adama Sidibeh of St Johnstone and Sam Gallagher of Blackburn Rovers are two strikers who have been connected with Swansea, however the former has apparently received no offers, and the latter’s wages could be a deciding factor.
The Swans are thought to be willing to trade Jerry Yates if they receive a reasonable offer this summer, and his departure might speed the club’s pursuit of Langstaff.
Macaulay Langstaff would be a gamble worth taking for Swansea City
Langstaff’s link with Swansea is unsurprising given how well he performed under Williams at Notts County, and it is surely a deal the Swans should pursue.
Langstaff is one of the most dangerous strikers in the EFL, and while the Championship would be a significant step up, he adapted well to League Two this season, and he may be able to do so again in the second tier.
Notts will be anxious to keep Langstaff, and the fact that he has been named captain may indicate that he will remain at Meadow Lane, but it would be difficult for the Magpies to turn down a sizable offer.
Swansea need a new striker.
This summer, they hope to improve on last season’s 14th-place finish, and while Langstaff is a risky addition, he deserves the chance to prove himself at a higher level.
