According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday and Angers have agreed on a deal to sign defender Yan Valery.
Sheffield Wednesday are entering their first summer window under Danny Rohl, and the German will be anxious to make an impact on the Hillsborough squad. He worked wonders with the players he inherited to lead the Owls to an unlikely Championship survival, but new faces will be sought as the German looks to propel the team up the division. The transfer window officially begins on Friday, and several players have already been linked with moves. Now, it appears that a breakthrough has been reached in the pursuit of defender Yan Valery.
The ex-Southampton man, now on the books in France with Angers, was linked recently and The Star now states that Sheffield Wednesday have agreed a fee for his signature.
Personal terms are already in place, so just a medical awaits before the expected completion of the signing next week.
Montpellier and Standard Liege were also keen, but Wednesday look to have won the race. Rohl and Valery reunited
The report states Rohl’s role in the proposed move to Sheffield Wednesday was key in Valery’s decision, which will be music to the ears of the club’s supporters.
The German is a highly-rated coach and it seems players are keen to play under his lead. That will hopefully give the Owls the edge in more transfer pursuits beyond this swoop for Valery.
The two will be familiar from their time together at Southampton, where the Tunisian defender was a youngster and Rohl was a member of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s backroom crew.
Valery, who can play as a wingback, full-back, or right-sided centre-back, tallied two goals and two assists in 53 games with the Saints. Valery’s position in the squad
The transfer for Valery is intriguing, given the major spots he plays are where Pol Valentin had excellent success near the conclusion of the season.
The Spaniard improved throughout the campaign and proved to be a valuable asset on the right flank.
The arrival of Valery may force them to compete for a place in the team, though it is probable that both will start for Sheffield Wednesday. As previously said, the Tunisian international is capable of playing on the right side of the back three, and he may be an excellent match for that position.
This might potentially push Dominic Iorfa, who is out of contract at the end of the month, down the pecking order.
