According to Football Insider, Portsmouth won the race to sign Barnsley defender Jordan Williams on a free transfer.
Williams, 24, is a free agent after finishing his contract with Barnsley. A number of clubs, notably West Brom and Cardiff City, have been pursuing Williams, but Championship newcomers Portsmouth have agreed to bring him to Fratton Park.
Barnsley stated last month that the defender would leave Oakwell at the end of his contract, and Pompey have moved quickly to clinch his signing.
He captained the Tykes throughout the 2023-24 season, which concluded in a 6-3 aggregate loss to Bolton in the League One play-off semi-final.
Williams appeared in 52 games across all competitions last season, 50 of which came as a starter. The Huddersfield academy product joined Barnsley in 2018 and has made 201 appearances for the Yorkshire club.
Portsmouth won the Williams race ahead of West Brom and Cardiff.
He gained experience in both League One and the Championship while at Oakwell.
Williams, who typically plays as a centre-back and right-back, joins Portsmouth after they were promoted to the second division as winners.
For the first time in 12 years, John Mousinho’s team will compete in the Championship next season.
Despite winning League One, Pompey have stated that Sean Raggett, Joe Rafferty, Lee Evans, Josh Martin, and Matt Macey will not be granted new contracts.
Tino Anjorin, Abu Kamara, Myles Peart-Harris, and Alex Robertson have all returned to their parent clubs after their loan spells at Fratton Park ended.
