Sheffield Wednesday close in on first summer signing with move now imminent

Sheffield Wednesday are expected to secure their first summer signing as they close in on Ben Hamer.
It was first reported earlier this month that the Owls were trying to recruit the seasoned shot-stopper when his contract with Watford expired, and it’s understood that the intention is to bring him in alongside last season’s successful loanee, James Beadle.

Now that the transfer window has officially opened, The Star understands that the signing of Hamer is close, with the 36-year-old expected to be Danny Röhl’s first permanent signing following the loan deals he completed in January.

The addition of the former Leicester City player will be welcomed considering that Wednesday currently only has one professional goalkeeper on its books, Pierce Charles, with Beadle having returned to Brighton & Hove Albion and Cameron Dawson – who was handed fresh terms – looking likely to leave.

Hamer will bring a wealth of experience, having played at every level of the English Football League and making 19 Premier League appearances, as well as a prior relationship with both Chris Powell and Sal Bibbo, as well as the ability to speak German fluently.

Wednesday are expected to have a busy summer as Röhl assembles a squad capable of improving on last season’s finish, and talks about new contracts and new arrivals are currently underway as the Owls manager seeks to put things in place before they return for preseason in a few weeks.
