Swansea City key defender subject to PL interest with club confident of deal

According to Darren Witcoop, Swansea City’s Nathan Wood is still attracting interest from Southampton, despite two failed bids.
Swansea City are preparing for another season in the Championship. The Swans had a dismal season last year, failing to gain any momentum. Southampton earned promotion. Russell Martin’s side defeated Leeds United in the play-off final last month and are ready to return to the Premier League this season. Wood, 22, made 26 appearances for Swansea City last season.

The teenage defender made 40 appearances the previous season, and former Swansea manager Martin hopes to rejoin with Wood at St Mary’s.

Southampton have made two unsuccessful offers for Wood, but Witcoop believes the Saints remain optimistic Martin

and Wood will reunite this summer. A Premier League switch.

The England youth international may need some time to adjust to the expectations, but he has talent, and Martin knows him better than most. Southampton will be attempting to survive and then reestablish themselves in the Premier League, and this summer window could make or break their next several seasons, as everyone knows that the first year back is often the most difficult.

Swans need to be improved
Swansea City haven’t been particularly competitive in recent seasons.

Since slipping to the second division, they have not consistently challenged the top six.

Luke Williams is currently in charge. This is his first pre-season with the club, and fans are optimistic that the extra time on the training pitch will result in his ideas being completely implemented next season. However, with a summer transfer window and pre-season, there are no excuses, therefore a quick start is critical for the former Notts County manager.

It will be intriguing to see how much Swansea City wants for Wood and how much Southampton is willing to pay. In any case, the Swans will need to add players this summer.
