‘Langstaff would be a nice signing’
Former England player-turned-pundit Carlton Palmer believes Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff is worth a gamble for Swansea City this summer.
Langstaff, who previously worked with Swansea head coach Luke Williams at Meadow Lane, has already sparked interest, with other clubs thought to be tracking him.
He concluded last season as the EFL’s top scorer, putting to rest speculation about his ability to make the transition from non-league to the Football League.ne 18
The Championship, on the other hand, would be a different level – but Palmer believes he has the potential to succeed in the second tier.
“A host of clubs are interested in Notts County centre-forward Macaulay Langstaff,” “To name a few, Swansea are said to be very, very keen, while Sunderland, Birmingham, and Coventry have all previously expressed interest.
“I know there’s this argument about the fact he’s come from non-league and he’s 27 years of age, but he’s been prolific in the National League North where he scored 28 goals for Gateshead, then he went up to the National League and scored 41 goals for Notts County, which is some record.
Could he do it again? Yes, he went to League Two and scored 29 goals, so no matter what anyone says, he can go up and score.
“I’m not saying he can jump up and score goals in the Premier League, but I do believe he can step up to League One after scoring 29 goals in League Two and still scoring more than 20 goals.
“Easily, I’d still bet on him scoring 25 goals. For me, he’s the perfect age, he’s a guy, he’s played non-league, he understands what he’s about, he knows where the back of the net is, and he’s worth a chance if you can acquire him for the right price.
“I don’t think I’d pay foolish money for him in the £5, £10, or £15 million range, but at 27, if you told me I could give £2, £3, or £4 million for this player and get a return of over 20 goals in the Championship, that’s well worth it and good business.
“He’s an old-school centre-forward who goes in there, takes shots on goal, and creates chances, so he’d be a terrific fit for any of those clubs, Swansea, Sunderland, Birmingham, or Coventry.
“If you create the chances, he’ll score.” The boss laughs off curiosity.
Rotherham United manager Steve Evans dismissed interest in Millers defender Cameron Humphreys.
Humphreys has been linked with a move away from The New York Stadium this summer, following their relegation from the Championship.
Swansea have been mentioned in dispatches, along with Sheffield Wednesday, Millwall, and Queens Park Rangers.
When asked specifically about interest from the Owls, Evans said there had been no contact from any club thus far. “If he’s mentioned with Wednesday then I’m not surprised if he’s mentioned with Thursday and Friday as well,” joked Evans to the Rotherham Advertiser. “Cameron has been really good for me in the three games he’s played but we are not aware of any interest from any club.”
Swansea’s under-21 team will compete in the Nathaniel MG Cup next season.
The teens were awarded a wildcard into last year’s competition and advanced to the final before losing to The New Saints.
They’ll be aiming higher this time. The first and second round draws for the 2024-25 Nathaniel MG Cup will be conducted tomorrow at 8 p.m.
