Contract detail of new Sheffield Wednesday signing revealed after he turned down Middlesbrough

Soon-to-be Sheffield According to The Star, Wednesday defender Max Lowe chatted with a Championship competitor before deciding to move to Hillsborough.
The Derbyshire-born left-back was confirmed as a new Owls signing last week and will join Wednesday as a free agent when his contract at Bramall Lane expires at the end of this month. He became S6’s second confirmed acquisition this summer, following renowned goalkeeper Ben Hamer. The Star reported the news of Lowe’s signing ahead of the first senior transfer from Blade to Owl in 73 years. And more information about the 27-year-old’s transfer has been disclosed.

It is understood that the former Derby County player met with a number of Championship clubs before to his Wednesday signing, one of which was Middlesbrough, before a conversation with Danny Röhl persuaded him to put aside any residual concerns about the cross-city move and join with S6. The Star can also reveal that Lowe has signed a two-year contract with Wednesday, although unlike most of the Owls’ recent accords, there is no option for an extension on either side. The deal will take Lowe, who was born in May, into his 30th year.

George Underwood, who signed for £1,000, is the first senior player to go from S2 to S6 since 1951. According to noted Owls historian Jason Dickinson, Underwood is one of only three first-team players to make that transfer in the two clubs’ 135-year history of coexistence. William Mellor transferred from United to ‘The Wednesday’ in 1893, and Bernard ‘Bunny’ Oxley made the short journey north in 1934.
