Sheffield Wednesday’s recruitment activity has recently exploded, with the surprise signing of former Sheffield United defender Max Lowe on a free transfer kicking things off. Danny Rohl’s men will not stop there, especially if they lose offensive midfielder Josh Windass shortly, with contract discussions apparently stalled to the point that the 30-year-old has turned down a new term to pursue other options.
This does not have to be absolutely devastating news for the Owls, as Windass has been hot and cold for big chunks of his time in South Yorkshire, and this might open the door for the Championship side to sign this promising 21-year-old.
Wednesday’s interest in Myles Peart-Harris, a young Brentford player, may be revived this summer, according to reports in the Sheffield Star. The Owls were looking for new signings in January to help them avoid relegation.
The Brentford prodigy chose to join Portsmouth on loan from his home club in January, and his time there was a relative success. The Bees will now be looking to see how their 21-year-old starlet adjusts to the step up a league with the Owls.
Capable of playing in Windass’ usual number ten spot or down the wing if necessary, this could be a worthwhile acquisition for Rohl and Co this summer, having brought in a number of shrewd buys via the loan market last season, including Ike Ugbo, who scored seven goals up front after joining from Troyes.
There may be pressure on Peart-Harris to be as energetic as Ugbo, especially if he is signed following Windass’ departure, who undoubtedly left his stamp on proceedings last season during pivotal matches in Wednesday’s effort to survive, scoring six goals.
What Peart-Harris might give Wednesday
Despite only making 12 appearances for Pompey while on loan, fans of the South Coast club praised the 21-year-old’s talent, with the above strike coming in his final game for John Mousinho’s side.
Supporters of now-non-league Forest Green will have even more to say about the Brentford youngster, who scored ten goals for them during the 2022/23 season, an impressive return given that his loan club would be relegated to League Two at the end of a disappointing season.
Rohl may see Peart-Harris as a player he can get even more out of at Hillsborough, as the German manager looks to say goodbye to more of the old guard soon in South Yorkshire.
Preferring young and hungry attackers worked wonders in the battle against relegation last season, with Anthony Musaba, in particular, standing out, with the 23-year-old picking up eight goals and five assists after being signed from AS Monaco by Rohl as an unknown, but potentially exciting, entity.
Peart-Harris, who has three Premier League appearances, has the potential to be just as effective if given more time. Indeed, Windass’ hit-and-miss record with Wednesday over the years suggests that his departure may not be as devastating as everyone believes, having scored three of his six league goals for his current South Yorkshire club last season in the final three games, while drawing blanks elsewhere.
Wednesday will simply hope that losses like Windass and the already known departure of Will Vaulks do not cause too much concern, as they hope to be comfortable in the Championship next season rather than constantly fighting for a spot at the bottom.
