“Soon be found out” – Middlesbrough sent warning over Delano Burgzorg deal after Huddersfield stint

Delano Burgzorg may struggle to make a consistent impact for Middlesbrough after a loan spell with Huddersfield Town last season.

That is according to Football League World’s Huddersfield Town fan analyst, Graeme Rayner, who reveals he did not anticipate the attacker to sign with a Championship team this summer.

Burgzorg played the 2023/24 season on loan with the Terriers from German top tier club Mainz.

Burgzorg made 33 appearances in all competitions for the Terriers at The John Smith’s Stadium, scoring seven goals and assisting twice.
However, those contributions were unable to prevent Huddersfield being relegated from the Championship to League One at the end of the season.

Nonetheless, Burgzorg will return to the second division of English football next season, a development that Terriers fans may not have expected.

Huddersfield supporter reacts to Delano Burgzorg’s Middlesbrough move.
Middlesbrough revealed last week that they have signed Burgzorg from Mainz on a permanent basis.

The 25-year-old joined the club for an unknown amount and signed a four-year contract that guarantees his future at The Riverside Stadium until the end of the 2027/28 season.

Last season, Michael Carrick’s squad finished eighth in the Championship league, four points behind the play-off places.

They will most certainly be aiming for a top six slot again next season, and Rayner does not appear to have expected them to target Burgzorg this summer.

When asked if he was surprised by the attacker’s move to Middlesbrough following his performances for Huddersfield last season, the Terriers fan told Football League World:

“Delano Burgzorg has some potential. He stood out among our team’s players for his ball skills. But he rapidly became one of our most irritating players.

“Because, if you say he’s got five touches, he wants six; if you say he’s got ten touches, he wants eleven; he always wants an extra touch, he always wants to beat his man.”

There was one game last year, and it was a critical game as all our games were, and he broke through and he had to do was square the ball to Jack Rudoni and we would have scored a vital goal, and he didn’t do it, and that was the final straw, I think the fans turned on him. “So I am surprised that he’s got a move to a team in the Championship, who will have watched him, and seen the same undoubted strengths but obvious flaws in his game as well.

“A four-year deal feels like a long deal. I made a joke that I’m surprised the Middlesbrough chairman was able to sign the contract because I doubt Burgzorg would have passed him the pen.

“So good luck to him. I think he’ll soon be found out and won’t feature as he might like for them, I think he could be a squad player. I could be proven wrong but I very much doubt it.”

Having completed that move, Burgzorg became ‘Boro’s second signing of the summer transfer window already.

Following his impressive loan stay at The Riverside Stadium from Leeds United in the second half of last season, the club has already announced an agreement to re-sign right-back Luke Ayling permanently.

Delano Burgzorg is an interesting signing for Boro.
It will be interesting to observe how Burgzorg progresses now that he has moved to Middlesbrough.

There is no disputing that bringing in a player like Burgzorg, who was just relegated from the Championship, feels like a gamble for ‘Boro considering their ambitions to move up the di

However, there is no disputing that he made some positive contributions for Huddersfield last season, and it is worth considering whether playing with a bigger squad could bring out the best in him. If that’s the case, this could be a good signing for Middlesbrough. However, if Burgzorg is unable to improve his form at Huddersfield, it is difficult to see him playing consistently for a team with higher ambitions.

Indeed, given Emmanuel Latte Lath’s form and the fact that ‘Boro appear to be looking to add to their offensive options this summer, Burgzorg will face stiff competition for a place in the team.

As a result, providing him with such The long contract may make this a fairly pricey purchase, if, as mentioned here, the attacker ends up playing a minor part for Middlesbrough.
