One of Sheffield Wednesday’s longest-serving players is set to depart the club at the end of the month, and he isn’t going far.
Cameron Dawson, a goalkeeper who joined Wednesday at the age of 15, has 47 clean sheets in 129 games for the Owls. It’s a jersey he proudly wore after supporting the team his entire life, helping them secure promotion with an amazing run of form near the conclusion of the 2022/23 season, capped off by an outstanding performance in their Wembley victory over Barnsley. The 28-year-old stopper will join Rotherham United on a free agent basis when his Owls deal runs out at the end of June. He becomes the second Wednesday player in a few weeks to join Steve Evans’ Millers revolution at the New York Stadium after Reece James moved on the same terms. There have also been reports of interest in midfielder George Byers. Dawson will make the move to fill the gloves of fan favourite Millers goalkeeper Viktor Johansson, who will join Stoke City when his current deal is up.

Dawson’s departure will come as a surprise, as he appeared to be on the verge of signing terms with Bristol Rovers in a move that would have reunited him with his previous manager Matt Taylor, whom he worked under on loan at Exeter City during a League Two promotion-winning season in 2021/22. However, things have changed in recent days, and Dawson will become a Miller, the tenth signing of Evans and Rotherham’s extremely busy summer.

Wednesday have already signed experienced goalkeeper Ben Hamer, who will join on a free agent basis after his contract with Watford expires. The Owls are believed to be in discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion over
