Wes Foderingham, a custodian from Sheffield United, has officially completed his transfer to West Ham, making him the team’s second summer acquisition thus far.
When his Sheffield United contract expires, Foderingham will join Julen Lopetegui’s team on a free transfer. With Nathan Trott and Joseph Anang no longer with the team, Foderingham will fill in as the third choice custodian.
Trott, 25, has been a member of the West Ham team since 2016, but he has only ever played seven minutes in the FA Cup against Doncaster Rovers as a member of the first team.
Trott made an impression for Vejle Boldklub in Denmark and has now officially departed the club on a permanent basis, leaving for an unknown fee.
After his contract expired, Ghanaian custodian Anang left the team on a free transfer and joined St Patrick’s Athletic of Ireland.
What part is Foderingham going to play?
Given that West Ham has two excellent goalkeepers in Alphonse Areola and Lukasz Fabianski, Foderingham is probably going to be considered the team’s third option. Nevertheless, at just 33 years old, there’s a good chance he’ll take over as number two after Fabianski leaves club football.
In his 31 games for Sheffield United last season, Foderingham only managed two clean sheets. The keeper, who was born in Hammersmith, is said to have played a significant role in the Blades’ significantly lower number of goals against this season.
Sheffield smashed the record for most goals conceded in a single Premier League season in 2023–24 with a staggering 104 goals conceded. The previous 20-year record, held by Swindon Town in 1993–94 (100 goals conceded), was surpassed by Sheffield.
Foderingham: An overview
At the age of 18, Wesley Andrew Foderingham started his football career in West London by playing in the Reserve League South for Fulham. However, his time there was short-lived as he soon moved to Histon FC in the Vanarama Conference League.
After that, Foderingham moved to Swindon Town in League Two, where he would play for The Robins until they were promoted to League One. Foderingham would stay with the club for a total of four years. Foderingham played for West Ham legend and former player Paolo Di Canio at this period; their relationship would make news for all the wrong reasons.
Di Canio called Foderingham a “Subbuteo keeper” and “League One Wes” in a post-match interview against Preston North End. Foderingham was substituted off the field twice early in the game. Nevertheless, the man formerly known as “League One Wes” gained notoriety at his next two clubs. After largely fruitful stints at Sheffield United and Rangers, he will soon be wearing the claret and blue of West Ham.
