After a quiet and perhaps frustrating start to the month, Bristol City’s recruitment drive appears to be getting into gear.
Bristol City has resubmitted a proposal for Rapid Vienna striker Fally Mayulu, Bristol Live understands, after being rejected earlier this week by the Austrian club.
Mayulu has only spent one season in the Austrian Bundesliga, having joined from second-tier BW Linz last year, but he appears to be on his way out as he grows increasingly confident that a deal with the Robins can be struck.
According to reports in Austria, the Frenchman is already on his way to Bristol for a medical after a fee of around £3 million was agreed upon, however this is regarded to be premature at this stage, since details have not to be completed between both clubs or even with the player. However, Rapid has apparently begun hunting for The 21-year-old was replaced by Erling Haaland’s nephew Jonatan Braut Brunes, who plays for OH Leuven, one of their goals, implying Mayulu’s departure could be imminent.
Technical director Brian Tinnion revealed on Wednesday that two players have made verbal agreements to join City, with details being finalised, though Mayulu is not thought to be one of those individuals and would thus represent a “third signing” as such, assuming the other two can be completed.
Mayulu, a tall and agile frontman who has showed strong progress throughout his time in Vienna, scoring 11 goals in 35 appearances in his rookie season, matches both Manning’s desired playing style and the entire age range the club would like to recruit this summer.Bristol Live has learned that City have been offered several free agents in their 30s who could be considered established and relatively high-profile Championship performers, but want to focus on recruiting youth, despite Nahki Wells, Harry Cornik, and Kal Naismith being the only players over the age of 29 in the dressing room.
Mayulu’s probable arrival also throws Tommy Conway’s future back into focus, as Tinnion revealed for the first time on Wednesday that City would prefer to recruit four offensive players this season, two of whom will be strikers. That number has risen by one since the end of last season, when Manning was cited as saying he needed a striker, winger, and playmaker – preferably Scott Twine – due to the probability that Conway would go.
The 21-year-old is reaching the end of his contract at Ashton Gate, and with no intention of signing a better deal, City are reluctant but aggressively looking to trade the Scotland international.
If Mayulu and the other striker, who is yet unknown, come, Conway will be free to pursue a move elsewhere if any teams match the Robins’ valuation expectations.
Conway is not expected to rejoin the Robins team until mid-July, having been allowed extra time off, along with Ross McCrorie, after spending over a month with Scotland in training and at Euro 2024.
Both players will thus miss the Robins’ training camp in Portugal, with City’s first summer friendly scheduled for Tuesday, July 23 against Newport County at the High Performance Centre.
