Michael Carrick warns Middlesbrough ahead of playing freshly promoted opponents.
After missing out on the playoffs by four points the previous season, Michael Carrick will undoubtedly be eager to get off to a good start in 2024/25 as he seeks promotion for the third time.On paper, the Teessiders have a reasonably favorable start to the season, beginning with a home game against Swansea City, who finished 14th last season.
Following the Swansea encounter, Middlesbrough will face two of the three newly promoted teams.Boro will travel to Derby County on Saturday, August 17th, followed by a home game against Portsmouth on Saturday, August 24.
While Boro could not have wished for a better start to the season, Carrick has urged them not to underestimate either of the two newly promoted teams they will face in August, according to Teesside Live.
He said: “After Swansea, we have two freshly promoted sides, Derby and Portsmouth, which will be a test. Just because they’re new doesn’t mean they’re lower on the career ladder.
“I think Ipswich demonstrated it last season, and there have been other examples over the years. Derby will be their first home game, so they’ll be ready for it.
“There are a variety of difficulties along the road, and it’s a little of a mystery because we haven’t played them in a long time. We’ll need to
Why should Carrick be concerned about facing recently promoted sides?
Carrick’s comments about Derby and Portsmouth may be interpreted by some as a method to inspire his team early in the season. However, Boro has previously struggled against new Championship teams, most notably in 2023/24.
Boro struggled against the new sides in the second level previous season, namely Ipswich Town, Plymouth Argyle, and Sheffield Wednesday.
Middlesbrough lost their first match with Ipswich 2-0 before drawing 1-1 near the conclusion of the season.
The North East club also drew and lost to Plymouth, with a 2-0 triumph over Sheffield Wednesday in April serving as their sole success among the newly promoted teams.
