DONE DEAL: Sunderland made an important trade signing.

Simon Moore, a custodian from Coventry City, a rival in the Championship, has joined Sunderland.

When his three-year contract with the Sky Blues expires at the end of this month, the 34-year-old will join the Black Cats.

Moore has consented to a two-year contract with a one-year club option.

The actions follow Sunderland’s undisclosed cost sale of backup keeper Alex Bass to Notts County.

Moore was a mainstay in the squad that was promoted from League One to the Championship in 2017, and he played in the Premier League with Sheffield United.

He also played for Brentford, Cardiff City, and Bristol City in the league, the latter on loan.

“This summer, we felt it was vital to identify and recruit a custodian who is capable of pushing Anthony Patterson daily and who has additional qualities to training and match environments,” stated Kristjaan Speakman, the director of football, on the club’s official website.

“Simon is driven to push Anthony just as much as he is to support our younger goalkeepers and the entire player group, despite having a different profile than many other players in our group.”
