Sheffield Wednesday are in the running to sign Charlie McNeill once he leaves Manchester United, according to the Championship Chat Podcast.
Sheffield Wednesday have been active in the transfer market early on, bringing in three new players as Danny Rohl begins his first summer window in charge.
Ben Hamer, Yan Valery, and Max Lowe have all committed to Hillsborough so far. More are expected to follow, as many players have been connected with the Owls.

The frontline hasn’t been strengthened yet, but Rohl will make sure to target a new talisman.

According to the Championship Chat Podcast, presented by Elliott Jackson of the Lancashire Telegraph and George Smith of the Manchester Evening News, Sheffield Wednesday is ‘firmly in the hunt’ to sign the 20-year-old.

McNeill will officially become a free agent at the end of this month after Manchester United confirmed that he will not renew his contract.

EFL experience to date
McNeill has spent much of his career in academy football. He played for Liverpool, Manchester City, and Manchester United, with his best performances coming in the latter’s U18s setup. However, the Droylsden-born prospect has also played professional football away from Old Trafford.

McNeill made his senior loan debut with Newport County in the second half of the 2022/23 season. In 20 appearances, the Manchester United star scored twice and assisted once.

The suspected Sheffield Wednesday target then joined League One club Stevenage at the start of the season. He scored on his debut in a 3-0 victory over Leyton Orient, but quickly fell down the pecking order under Steve.

McNeill may not have achieved prolific form in senior football yet, but his youth record demonstrates that he possesses the goal-scoring instincts to succeed in the first team game.

Sheffield Wednesday can take a conservative approach to his development, perhaps giving him playing time here and there or authorizing a new temporary move for the forward.

Allowing him to settle into a permanent situation, on the other hand, may help McNeill regain his goal-scoring potential. A move to Manchester United appears to be ideal for his development, but he must also make the appropriate next move.

Time will tell whether he links up with Rohl and co. at Hillsborough, but as free The youngster is about to enter the workforce.
