Leeds United will face fellow Championship side Middlesbrough in the first round of next season’s Carabao Cup.
Leeds, with ball number 19 in the Northern Section of the cup draw, will face Boro and former Elland Road favourite Luke Ayling at Elland Road. The draw was performed by ex-Whites hero Gary McAllister and former Chelsea player Frank Sinclair.
“Leeds United at home, really pleased they got a nice home tie there but that’s going to be a cracker,” McAllister told the BBC. “No love lost between those two teams, both sets of fans don’t really get on with each other so that’ll be a lively game as well.” Last season, Daniel Farke’s side defeated Shrewsbury Town in the first round at Elland Road, but were eliminated in the second round by League Two hosts Salford City following an incredible penalty shootout that ended 9-8. The game ended 1-1 when ex-Leeds striker Matt Smith’s spectacular header opened the scoring and Pascal Struijk equalised. Crysencio Summerville and Sam Greenwood were denied by the woodwork before the Ammies prevailed with spot kicks. Speaking at full-time, Daniel Farke stated: “First and foremost, we are unhappy because we hoped to advance to the next round. I feel for the lads when you judge them.
In most cases, you must win the game. It was an extraordinary quantity of chances that we produced; it is extremely difficult to create huge chances against a team that is sitting so deep and defending for their lives, and for them, it is the game of the season. We generated so much that it felt like we had enough chances to score five by halftime, but in reality, we only scored once in 90 minutes.” Leeds suffered their third penalty loss in five seasons in the competition.
