Eom Ji-sung could be on his way to Swansea City after Gwangju FC reportedly agreed to trade the winger this summer.
Swansea are reportedly interested in the 22-year-old, who was on the radar of Scottish heavyweights Celtic this time last year.
According to reports in the Korean press, the club has already made an offer of roughly £800,000 to bring him to South Wales, with the player reportedly interested in a transfer to Europe. However, there has already been speculation that the K-League team would be willing to sell one of its greatest players in the middle of the season.
Now, it appears that Gwangju will let the player go, with the club’s top brass allegedly convening an emergency meeting to discuss what will happen next.
However, while they look eager to let the player go, it is alleged that the two parties have yet to agree on a sum for the former South Korea international.
Lim Geun-hoon, the club’s general manager, informed KBS that the decision to trade Eom Ji-sung was made for the player’s future. However, there are differences of opinion between the two clubs on the transfer fee, so we intend to request an increase from Swansea City.
According to reports, the current contract will include a condition requiring the Swans to pay roughly £40,000 if the player makes 15 appearances, as well as a 17.5% sell-on option.
Ji-sung’s agent commented on the decision about the player’s future, saying: “First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude to Gwangju for their magnanimous decision.”
“This is a tremendous opportunity for Ji-sung. Above all, the Swansea City management intends to deploy Ji-sung as a’starter’ and has already told us exactly position he would play.”
Regarding Gwangju’s efforts to negotiate a larger transfer fee, his agent stated: “I hear that the official document that Swansea sent to Gwangju is a ‘final letter.’ I believe we need to communicate more with both clubs.”
