Brighton are likely to shatter their transfer record by acquiring Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle for around £33 million, according to The Athletic.
According to transfer specialist David Ornstein, Newcastle has allowed the 19-year-old to talk personal terms with the Seagulls.
Talks were due to take place on Saturday evening (June 29), with Minteh having already flown from Gambia for medical exams in Albion. Ornstein wrote: “Newcastle were looking to sell Minteh to help them comply with the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).” If the team fails to achieve sufficient sales before the June 30 reporting deadline, they risk losing points for the next season.
Nottingham Forest has also been linked with Minteh and Elliot Anderson, a Newcastle Academy graduate. Minteh was reportedly reluctant to join French club Lyon, wanting to remain in the Premier League. Minteh joined Tyneside from Danish club Odense Boldklub in 2023 but did not play for Eddie Howe’s side.
He played the season on loan at Feyenoord of the Eredivisie, where he scored 10 goals and assisted six times.
If Brighton can complete the deal for Minteh, it will be a club record transfer, surpassing the £30 million paid for Joao Pedro last summer.
