Matty Baker, the defender Stoke City signed from Gillingham three years ago, has left the club after being sold to League Two side Newport County.
The 21-year-old is now a permanent Newport player, having spent all of last season and half of the previous season on loan at Rodney Parade.He leaves the bet365 Stadium having never made a professional appearance for the Potters since joining from Gillingham in the summer of 2021.
In his first season at Stoke, he appeared 17 times in the Premier League 2, and in his second, he came off the bench for Championship games against Hull and QPR in September 2022.However, a few weeks later, he was loaned out to Newport. He is now in a position to add to his 57 appearances for a club that finished 18th in the fourth division last season. He will also look to continue his development with Wales’ Under 21s.
Stoke City have already strengthened their senior centre-back options with the signing of Ben Gibson from Norwich City. Steven Schumacher has Ben Wilmot and Michael Rose at his disposal.
