Barnsley join Derby County in transfer race for award-winning Premier League player

Derby County will face competition from Barnsley for a Premier League player available for six figures this summer.

Derby County won promotion to the Championship in 2023/24 after finishing second in League One behind Portsmouth. The Rams have just been in England’s third division for two years, and Paul Warne will be determined to avoid relegation in the upcoming season.

The 2024 summer transfer season has only been open for less than a month, but Derby have already been working hard behind the scenes to give Warne the best chance of earning Championship survival.

Ben Osborn was a welcome arrival from Sheffield United earlier this summer, and Kayden Jackson and Jerry Yates have also recently joined Pride Park.

However, further business is likely at Derby this summer, especially in the midfield area following the exits of Korey Smith and Conor Hourihane Barnsley join Derby in the fight for Idris El Mizouni.

El Mizouni was considered by Derbyshire prior to the 2023/24 season, and their interest has been rekindled this summer.

Oxford United, who gained promotion to the Championship in 2023/24, were said to be competing with Derby for the 23-year-old’s signing.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Barnsley are also interested in signing El Mizouni.

It is understood that now-Premier League club Ipswich are willing to sell the player for a figure ranging from £250,000 to £500,000.

What Idris El Mizouni can contribute to Derby County
Even with Osborn’s recent arrival, Derby remain short in the central midfield position heading into 2024/25.

However, El Mizouni could provide some much-needed quality depth to their squad this summer.

Despite being only 23 years old, El Mizouni was given the captain’s armband several times while on loan at Leyton Orient last season.

The Tunisian international made 45 games in all competitions and received the Leyton Orient Supporters Club Merit Award, demonstrating his contribution at the club.

El Mizouni has only four Championship appearances.

However, El Mizouni’s performances in the previous campaign imply that he possesses all of the skills required to advance in his career.
