Hollis-Jefferson last played in the NBA as a bench player for the Portland Trail Blazers three years ago. He’d converted a 10-day contract into a normal deal and impressed enough to make Portland’s playoff roster. But since then, Hollis-Jefferson has vanished from the NBA radar.
He’s played all over the world, including Turkey, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines, and he’s tired of traveling for work.
“I sit here and travel all over the world to hoop (it’s nice), but I miss my family every day [sic]. Take them with you; I’m not about to haul babies from country to country. (They need stability) All I need is a chance to serve a team and be near to what truly counts,” Hollis-Jefferson wrote on Instagram. “Thousands of players and basketball fans wrote me after the World Cup,” Hollis-Jefferson said. “They heard what the world was saying and they saw me HOOP.. you mean to tell me I couldn’t help they team?”
Hollis-Jefferson, 29, was a standout for Jordan at the World Cup last summer, scoring 23.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. “It’s so crazy mostly all those players aside from team USA plays in Europe.. you mean to tell me I can’t get a worthwhile euro deal?” Hollis-Jefferson wrote. “And they pay dudes $100,000 per month to wet the bed???” No disrespect, but the numbers prove it when the stage is lit.” Hollis-Jefferson was the Trail Blazers’ No. 23 choice in the 2015 draft, and his draft rights were traded to the Brooklyn Nets. He played four seasons in Brooklyn, averaging a career high 13.9 points per game in 2017-18.
In 2019, the Nets declined to extend a qualifying offer to Hollis-Jefferson, who became an unrestricted free agency. He joined the Raptors after Toronto’s championship season and proved to be a valuable player, averaging 7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in 60 appearances.
Toronto currently has one available roster space for training camp and could add another if Sasha Vezenkov leaves the team this summer. However, it appears quite improbable that Toronto will choose to re-sign Hollis-Jefferson at this stage of his career.
