The Dallas Mavericks enjoyed one of their best offseasons in franchise history, figuring out how to improve a squad that helped them reach the NBA Finals last season.
They began the summer by moving Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round selections, then signed Naji Marshall and acquired Klay Thompson in a six-team transaction. Thompson selected the Mavs over the Los Angeles Lakers in free agency, and his shooting and championship pedigree will help Dallas become one of the Western Conference’s best teams next season.
Klay Thompson showed that stars want to join with the Mavericks in free agency.
On Tuesday, the Mavs conducted an introduction press conference for Thompson, Grimes, and Marshall, during which Thompson shattered a long-standing narrative about the Mavs. Thompson joined the Mavs to seek a fresh start, and his other reasons for joining the organization demolished the previous narrative that no significant free agents wanted to sign with Dallas.
Thompson cited Dallas’ young talent, playstyle, and treatment of its players as factors for signing with the Mavericks, and after landing Kyrie Irving and Thompson in consecutive years, Dallas is definitely becoming a destination for top players.
Mavs supporters have grown accustomed to elite players using Dallas as leverage in free agency and rarely signing with them, but Thompson and Irving’s choice to stay is gradually changing that narrative for the better.
Thompson could have easily joined the Lakers for more money and remained in California, but his decision to join the Mavs speaks much about the operation that Nico Harrison and company run. Harrison and crew have established an entirely new culture, and these measures ensure that the Mavs will be competitive for years to come.
The combination of one of the best shooters of all time, Luka Doncic, and Irving will give rival teams nightmares, and they have the ability to construct a dynasty if their youthful talent develops. Dereck Lively II appears to have the potential to become one of the NBA’s top big men, and many of their other key role players are also young.
Thompson is excited to go back to work, and the upcoming season is just as anticipated as ever.
Stay tuned for all the latest on Klay Thompson and the Dallas Mavericks this summer.
