Middlesbrough star who wanted to emulate club legend now open to leaving Boro

A Middlesbrough player who only joined the club a year ago is expected to leave during the 2024 summer transfer window.

Middlesbrough has been one of the most active Championship clubs in the 2024 summer window thus far. Michael Carrick has been working hard with Kieran Scott to enhance his side as he looks to return Boro to the Premier League for the first time since 2017.

The North East outfit has already signed three first-team players, including 16-year-old Harley Hunt, who recently joined from Swindon Town.

There have also been some exits from the Riverside in the last month or so.

Paddy McNair and Liam Roberts left the club on free transfers when their contracts expired at the end of 2023/24.

Hayden Coulson has joined Blackpool permanently, while Sammy Silvera has been loaned to Portsmouth for the upcoming season. Tom Glover is poised to depart Middlesbrough.

In the current window, another name appears to be heading for the Teesside exit door.

The player in question is Tom Glover, who joined Boro on a free transfer from Melbourne City last summer. According to Teesside Live, the goalkeeper declared his desire to imitate great Boro shot-stopper Mark Schwarzer upon joining the club.

He stated, “It’s painted all over the walls of the training ground [memories from 2004]!” Boro used to have some Australian goalkeepers on their roster (Schwarzer and Brad Jones).

“My dream is to create my mark and follow in their footsteps.

“Schwarzer is an Australian icon. He was someone I looked up to as a child. If I can follow in his footsteps and have half of his success, that is what I strive for.

Now, it appears that Glover will not get the opportunity to follow in Schwarzer’s footsteps.

According to Teesside Live, after spending 2023/24 as Carrick’s second-choice goalkeeper, the Australian is expected to pursue first-team opportunities elsewhere if they arise.
