Pompey’s transfer chase is now a ‘different ball game’ than it was last summer, according to John Mousinho.
The Blues’ head coach explained how his club is now competing with some of the game’s greatest names for targets this summer.
And that reality is posing issues as they compete against sides with significantly greater financial resources for talent. Last year, Pompey rose to the status of transfer heavyweights in League One, as they were considered as an appealing alternative for the players for whom they competed.
Mousinho emphasized that the Eisners will once again provide strong support for the club’s football operation as it seeks to create a competitive Championship squad. However, competing for talent with West Brom and Leeds presents the Pompey recruitment team with a completely different set of obstacles than they have hitherto faced.
Mousinho told The News during a Facebook Live Q&A session: ‘The notion is it’s more difficult – and it is.’The Championship presents a drastically different picture than League One, given the club’s size and resources.
‘We’ve stepped up and are competing with the bulk of previous Premier League clubs, including ourselves.
‘The finances certainly fluctuate as well, but we’re very well supported, which is a benefit.
‘It’s a different game, I believe. When we spoke with other players last year, if they had other League One possibilities, we were often the largest club in terms of size, stadium capacity, and history.
‘We are now discussing with players, and because we are competing at the right end of the market, they also have other possibilities.
‘Suddenly, you’re competing with Leeds, West Bromwich, and other clubs. It’s quite different.
