New Luton defender Tom Holmes is impressing manager Rob Edwards and hopes to join the Hatters’ back-line this season.
The 24-year-old joined Kenilworth Road from League One Reading last January, but was promptly loaned back to the Royals to assist the team stay in the third tier of English football. They were successful in doing so, albeit Holmes’ impact was limited due to a back injury that limited him to only four games in the second part of the season. Prior to his injury, Holmes progressed through the levels of his hometown club, appearing 129 times and scoring once. With Gabe Osho leaving Kenilworth Road on a free transfer to join Auxerre, and Amari’i Bell and Reece Burke unlikely to be fit for the season opener against Burnley, Holmes has an opportunity to push his claim to start in Town’s
upcoming friendlies. While Edwards faces competition from Teden Mengi and Mads Andersen to do so, he is surely catching the eye with his no-nonsense style, as the manager stated: “He’s been impressive in pre-season so far. He wasn’t feeling well over the weekend, so he He may not play any minutes on Tuesday, but he has made an excellent first impression. “He came in at the conclusion of last season but wasn’t totally fit; he trained with us in the previous few weeks but is now up to speed. He seems at ease now and is getting to know the lads and what we want to do, so I really like how he looks right now. He’s a proper bloke who can also play, so he’ll make a significant contribution in the first few weeks. He has that opportunity now, and he’s off to a good start.
