Former Brighton player Gerry Ryan has died at the age of 68.
The former forward appeared in the 1983 FA Cup final for the Seagulls against Manchester United. He also played 18 times for the Republic of Ireland, alongside Arsenal icon Liam Brady, whom he later worked with at Brighton.
Brady named Ryan as assistant manager when in charge of Brighton, and he paid respect to his buddy and former teammate.
He said, “Gerry was a great teammate. He was a speedy winger, fearless, and he challenged everyone.
“Off the pitch, Gerry was a really pleasant guy. He was friendly, unpretentious, and got along with everyone he met. Everyone who knew him will mourn his passing.
Ryan has received several honors, including from Brighton, where he appeared 199 times between 1978 and 1985.
The club said in a statement: “Everyone at Brighton & Hove Albion is profoundly sorry to learn of the death of former Albion striker Gerry Ryan at the age of 68.
“At this sad time, our thoughts are with Gerry’s family and friends.”

Ryan, who had previously played for Derby and Bohemians, helped Brighton gain promotion to the top division in 1979.
A fractured leg forced him to retire in 1985. After hanging up his boots, the Irishman bought a tavern, which he ran with wife Simeon until suffering Ryan suffered a stroke in 2007. Fans have expressed their condolences, with one saying: “RIP Gerry. Something special to watch when in full flight ball at his feet.” Another added: “Sad news. One of my favourites. RIP.” A third wrote: “So sorry to hear that what a legend 🙏”
