The Boston Red Sox made six consecutive pitcher selections in the later stages of this year’s MLB Draft.
A brief look at their baseball cards reveals they are from Florida, California, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, Oregon, and… down the street?
The Red Sox selected Shea Sprague, a BC High product and Hanover local, in the 13th round on Tuesday, 387th overall.
Sprague, a junior left-handed pitcher at the University of North Carolina, made 17 appearances and 15 starts for the Tar Heels. He concluded the season with a 3-2 record and a 4.25 ERA, earning All-ACC Second Team recognition.
He transferred to UNC last summer following two excellent underclassmen seasons at Elon University, where he recorded a 2.36 ERA in 152⅓ innings pitched from 2022-23.
Sprague was named Patriot Ledger All-Scholastic as a senior at BC High in 2021. He had a 1.13 ERA over 37 innings in his final season, going 4-0 with 62 strikeouts for the Eagles under coach Norm Walsh. Sprague, who stands 6-foot-3, was a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League’s Harwich Mariners at the time he announced his transfer to UNC and spoke with Patriot Ledger reporter Kevin Perrington-Turner.
“(I’m) definitely taking it one step on the way, but playing professionally is definitely a dream of mine,” Sprague claimed last summer. “And hopefully it comes true someday.”
