Jared Dudley shares Jason Kidd’s message. Las Vegas — The Dallas Mavericks’ NBA Summer League team hasn’t played their best basketball yet in the competition. Nonetheless, the team has shown indications of promise, with assistant coach Jared Dudley leading the charge as Summer League head coach. Dudley recently revealed phone discussions he had with Mavericks regular season head coach Jason Kidd. “I call him after every game,” Dudley told reporters Tuesday. “We chat about various topics… The first game’s issue was knowing when to use timeouts with a 10-point lead. What you could have done differently in terms of rotation. Who should play more and who should play less?”
The Mavericks’ Summer League team is 0-3.
They were most recently defeated by the Miami Heat, 92–79. Dallas suffered a 108-88 loss against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday. The Mavericks’ Monday loss resulted in 27 turnovers in a disappointing performance.
“After last game (Monday), I mean, we kind of had to laugh it off,” Dudley continued. “Sometimes it’s embarrassing enough to be humorous. They (the Grizzlies) literally had seven to nine thefts in the backcourt just by going one-on-one. That is one of the rarest sights you see. You might see it once throughout a game. We saw it seven or eight times. I got to do a better job of putting in your screens, different individuals bringing the ball up and seeing who can, and we worked.
on here today (on Tuesday at practice).
“Overall, that game, when you have 27 turnovers, you’re not beating anyone.”
NBA Summer League players try to secure spots with the Mavericks Olivier-Maxence Prosper has the potential to join the Mavericks. He’s had his fair share of ups and downs in the NBA Summer League thus far.
“Using O-Max (Prosper)… “Let him focus more on defense,” Dudley added. “Offense is simply a flow. You know the difference between a good and bad shot. Take the step back, be the best defensive player you can be, and we’ll get you on the court. Once you’re on the court and a coach trusts you, you may gradually enhance your offensive game.
Players like AJ Lawson, Alex Fudge, and Melvin Ajinca, a 2024 second-round choice, have also received notice. The Mavericks’ Summer League squad is intriguing, despite the team’s disappointing win-loss record. It is not surprising that some of these players will eventually make an impact on the regular season club.
At the present, Dallas is focused on finishing the 2024 NBA Summer League on a positive note. Jared Dudley, who hopes to become a head coach someday, will continue to discuss the team with Jason Kidd. Learning from Kidd will only benefit Dudley as he seeks to establish himself as a future head coaching contender.
The Mavericks’ next Summer League game, an NBA Finals rematch against the Boston Celtics, is slated for Friday in Las Vegas.
