Reading great Brian McDermott has emphasized the significance of finding ‘the right owner’ as soon as possible so that the club can construct a competitive squad.
McDermott, one of only two individuals to guide Reading to the Premier League in 2012, worked at the club for over a decade and even returned briefly in 2016.
Still keeping an eye on his previous club, McDermott returned to the pitch in 2022 for the club’s 150th anniversary legends match and has since served as Director of Football at Scottish Premiership team Hibernian.
Former Wycombe Wanderers owner Rob Couhig is anticipated to become the Royals’ next owner, with sources indicating that it may happen as soon as a fortnight, ending Dai Yongge’s seven-year tenure.
“I believe they have a half-decent squad, but Brian Carey and the recruitment guys will want to get on and bring people into the club,” he told former club captain Ady Williams. “They don’t want to leave everything till the last minute.
“The ownership situation is the most crucial item, but it has been for the past decade. Getting the proper person through the door is critical, but I don’t know what’s going on. It needs to.
be sorted, and it’s quite frustrating to see.” McDermott, 63, left Easter Road last month after working with Hibernian last season.
Despite being in the game for nearly 45 years, McDermott hopes to continue in some form.
“I left Hibs two or three weeks ago and delivered a presentation yesterday. I am going to set up something on my own. I believe it is crucial for me to be relevant. I’m an elderly man now, but if I can aid players or coaches, I’ll do so. I’m attempting to give presentations in the public domain, which I will do, and see what happens.I am still quite eager to work. I enjoy working in a football setting; nevertheless, I dislike some of the things that goes on in football at times but that’s how it is and always has.”
