SHOCKING NEWS : Middlesbrough transfer plans changed as key player makes shock exit

Boro will need a new third-choice keeper after Jamie Jones joined Salford City. Jamie Jones is set to add to Middlesbrough’s summer transfer needs after opting out of a new contract to join League Two club Salford City.

Jones was out of contract at Boro this summer, but he returned to the club for the start of pre-season to complete therapy on a shoulder injury sustained near the conclusion of last season. He attended the club’s training camp in Portugal last week before moving to Salford.

Despite not playing a game for Boro last season, the club wanted him to stay because his experience made him an ideal third-choice option. However, the opportunity to join Salford and compete for game time was too tempting to pass up. He said: “I went a year without playing last year because I was the third choice at Middlesbrough, sometimes stepping up to the bench, but I just love the game of football; I just want to go out there every Saturday and put in performances to help the team, and I have missed that aspect of football, so it will be great to get it back.

“I have had a good career and I am proud of that career and I want to make it better, by joining Salford I am doing that, so it is going to be a great season for me, and a great season for the team, that’s the main thing.” While Boro still has four senior goalkeeping options, Jones’ sudden exit is likely to encourage the club to enter the transfer market. Seny Dieng is likely to be the first choice again next season, with Sol Brynn, Zach Hemming, and Tom Glover now vying for the second position. However, neither of those three are likely to be pleased with the third-choice post normally filled by senior keepers such as Jones. The 35-year-old moved to Boro from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer 12 months ago.
