The Toronto Raptors have officially released Bulgaria’s Aleksandar (Sasha) Vezenkov. According to NBA analyst Keith Smith, the Bulgarian star “left 6.6 million dollars on the table to make this happen–to be released by the Canadians.” Vezenkov can now sign a deal with his previous club Olympiakos, but he has to wait 48 hours on the “rejection list.” This theory allows any team to add him to their roster and take over his contract, but the possibilities are slim because it is commonly known he wishes to return to Greece.
“Sasha Vezenkov has waived his entire 6.6 million dollars salary in a buyout from the Toronto Raptors, a league source told @spotrac,” according to Keith Smith’s Facebook page. CBS also covered the news. Eurohoops
stated that Olympiakos and Vezenkov first agreed on a lucrative four-year contract with an annual salary of 4,000,000 euros for the 28-year-old Bulgarian, a sum that the club has not yet acknowledged. Piraeus Vezenkov, Bulgaria’s most accomplished athlete at the moment, had a terrible first season in the NBA with Sacramento, as he was injured for extended periods of time, impeding his adaption. Last season, Vezenkov averaged 5.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 42 games for the Sacramento Kings. There were opportunities for his future in both the NBA and Europe. However, it appears that he will return to Olympiakos, the team that drove him to the top of the Euroleague.
