The New England Patriots are mourning the sudden death of a former player.

The Patriots announced in a post on X that Korey Cunningham, 28, has died.

“The New England Patriots are saddened to learn of Korey Cunningham’s unexpected passing,” the organization stated in the statement. “We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Korey’s family, teammates, and all who mourn his loss.” The Arizona Cardinals drafted Cunningham, a 6-foot-6, 311-pound offensive tackle, in 2018. He spent the 2019 and 2020 NFL seasons with the Patriots, playing in 12 games.

“We are devastated to learn of Korey Cunningham’s demise. He contributed significantly to the locker room’s energy and camaraderie. The Giants posted on X that their thoughts are with Korey’s family, friends, and teammates. Cunningham’s alma college, the University of Cincinnati, also made a statement on his loss.

“We are heartbroken to learn of Korey Cunningham’s demise. Korey was a Bearcats captain with a strong work ethic and an enthusiastic attitude. “He will be greatly missed, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and teammates,” the college posted on X.

According to ESPN, police in Clifton, New Jersey, had to force their way into Cunningham’s home, where they discovered him dead Thursday.

ESPN reported that Cunningham was known for his cheery nature and huge laugh.

There was no immediate announcement on Cunningham’s cause of death.
